Has anyone ever prepared a months worth of freezer meals?  If so, may I please have a copy of your recipes and the grocery list you used?  What advice can you give me?  This will be my first time 🙂

Self-Serve V.S. Full-Serve

Christmas is right around the corner and the streets, stores and restaurants are filled with people choosing ways to celebrate with loved ones. Recently I was out and about viewing classics with dear friends. After the viewing, my young buddies and I went through a drive through of a familiar fast food restaurant. Each child wanted their order personalized…. And I thought I succeeded… Until I realized I needed to pull to the second window after paying. The cashier waved her hand in a “shoo, shoo” way , looking puzzled …. trying to stay on task.

As I collected the order , I realized I forgot to ask for no salt on the fries … (Most times it’s like eating a few fries with the salt!) and asked if it was too late . The look on her face reminded me I should have said something to begin with, so as she handed me my drinks I told her not to worry. She looked grateful .

When she handed me the bags of food , I remembered the sauce!! One of the most important features of this child’s order. When I asked the server if I could have some, she said it was in the child’s box. I told her that it couldn’t be because I never specified which flavor . The girl hesitated and looked in the back seat … Then kind of hurumphed, turned to fulfill the request… Then returned with the tiny box between her thumb and finger… Revealing the label… Tilted her head then asked, “this?”
” yes, please. Thank you.”

As I drove away I wondered if my order was complete…. Which it was, but the hamburger ordered wasn’t just ketchup as I had asked… It was everything. Fortunately my friend was okay after I scraped the pickles and onions off.

I share this story because , as I said earlier, it’s almost Christmas: a time of giving and receiving … A time for loved ones and music.

How does this fast food story relate? I mean , these people are there to serve … And they ALWAYS get it wrong !

But so do I…. Yes, I was the customer… But they are also human beings with lives away from their jobs that I don’t know about. Gone is my opportunity then to find something good she was doing and thank her for … Maybe brightening her day in some way.

I believe Jesus was born Into this world to teach us to serve, not out of obligation, but because of compassion . There weren’t burger joints back in His day, but there is an example in John 4:

4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

I know I need to get away from fast food… But it’s quick. And the custom in Jesus time was He was NOT to talk to a Samaritan woman. Normally He would have walked around the city limits to follow custom and avoid the Samaritans . But He was thirsty.

Instead of serving Him in the heat of the day she reminds Jesus of the rules. She probably responded as a result of the life she lived…. I’ll let you finish reading the beautiful story in John 4.

What might have happened if Jesus responded differently? What would have happened if I responded differently?
